Junk Journals
Junk Journal
A pile of lovingly hoarded, decorated, and curated trash, collected during travels, with high expectations of how you might use them later.
How I like to do it
- Buy a journal in the country of your travels. It adds integrity and marks the first little adventure of the trip.
- Select a journal based on length and complexity of trip. You don’t want to end up with a journal with a hundred blank pages. Smaller journals are usually better.
- If traveling with others, or visiting friends along the way, make everyone you meet write or draw something in the journal to use up as many pages as possible. You may have to insist.
- Bring double-sided tape in your suitcase! You want to be ready when inspiration strikes, and you find the right journal. It is easier to find a notebook in a foreign country than flat, double-sided tape.
How I hope to improve in the future
Working on the journal throughout the trip to avoid having homework when I get back from the trip. Write and scribble funny moments as they happen- I might remember big stories in the future, but it’s not the same as having a live declaration from your boyfriend in the heat of the moment that Aegean Airlines is the worst airline ever!! The pages I make in the moment, even if they’re ugly, mean a lot more to me later.
