Illustration

Visuals make words more accessible to someone who is learning a new language, has difficulty reading, or is learning a new skill and does not yet have a command of the vocabulary. I pursue projects that allow illustrations to be the legend to the map of difficult to grasp concepts.

Synapse Magazine

Synapse magazine has Oberlin College science students write articles and pairs them with artists who create artwork to bring those articles to life. I worked on The Synapse for three years helping make scientific writing more accessible to everyone. I enjoyed partnering up with people who had different skills and doing research so I could teach others these concepts.  (2015-2018)

The Big Bang Theory
My representation of the conception of our Universe. Videos I found online showed the Big Bang as an explosion while journals I read called it an expansion. A deeply wrinkled piece of paper expanding infinitely felt like a more appropriate metaphor for a great expansion that maintains the same amount of matter. I decided to call upon Michelangelo’s iconic Creation of Adam, making an omnipotent source the catalyst responsible for this expansion. Michelangelo’s piece relies on the bounds of the human experience to depict something as awesome and powerful as god, presupposing that an all-powerful omnipotent god would have a human body, or any body at all. My depiction relies on the bounds of the human experience by using a ball of paper to describe something as enigmatic as the Big Bang.

Archaic Bacteria Wakes From a Deep Freeze
This article is about concerns that rising ocean temperatures are thawing prehistoric bacteria. Humans and animals would have no immunity to these ancient organisms. This watercolor illustration shows organisms dripping from the walls and ceilings of a formerly frozen cave into the water and being deposited near the animals. The sunset and cave outline form a human face, representing humanity’s responsibility for rising temperatures.
