How the Mind Views the Body
THESIS VIII
New project explorations, narrowing in.
For video sculptures we had the following assignment:
In groups of 2 create a single channel or multi-channel video portrait of someone, some place or some thing using screens and printouts, cutouts or 2d overlays. This installation should give us an idea of the subject through time based media and physical installation.. Think about ways to embed screens into objects, dress up a screen with paper cutouts, or mask the fact that it’s a screen in the first place. This screen can be your monitor, phone, or a small screen purchased online.
This is what I made:
This sculpture represents the ephemeral nature of our mind’s perception of our body. While the physical form of our body changes relatively gradually and slowly, our minds can change in a moment. Some of these animations show how our surroundings permeate our views of ourselves, we may see ourselves reflected in our breakfasts, in the media, in a glass of wine, the shape of an old fashioned camera. We cannot separate our minds from the stimulus that exists around us, contrary to Descartes’ belief that the mind and body are categorically different.
